Group Picture at Camp Wasewagan
|
For three days, the Mark Keppel Academic Decathlon (MKHS ACADEC) team celebrated the weekend with the Alhambra and West Decathlete teams at Camp Wasewagan up in Angelus Oaks, San Bernardino. It was a three day camp from November 23-25. Saturday was our first day, where we all met at Alhambra High School to get on the bus. (A few Keppel girls went with Mr. Tran, the awesome Keppel ACADEC coach!) An almost three hour drive, we got to Camp. There was a bit of snow at the camp, and from our cabin (Keppel boys resided in Cabin 4) there was snow right outside. The air was cold, but was really fresh (talking about more oxygen [cough cough, not the ones paired with carbon]). The cabin looked liked the camps in WWII, but more room and a ton more sanitary with a heater, and only two beds per bunk.

We settled and had lunch in the lounge (which btw, had an actual fireplace, a pool table, air hockey, and foosball games available, with nacho chips available all day), which we were assigned to one of the 7 groups (I was grouped in Group #1). Jack, Kelvin, and Carl were also in my group. Virginia, Carmen, and Alecs, were from Alhambra, and from West we have Brittany and
another girl of which I cannot recall of her name. We were assigned to interp a song from ACADEC. From our OK scores in the scavenger hunt, we got middle pick. We chose O Terra Addio--a mistake because the song is almost 6 minutes long (and is in Italian). We used up most of our time prepping roles and what to do, and it was decided that Kelvin was the general (the guy in the tomb), Carl was the princess in the tomb with general, Jack was the lead priest, the girls were the other priests, and I was the princess who cried on the side of the stage. We performed after dinner (dinner was amazing I've gotta say), and we got a decent score. The other teams performed (they were awesome) and got great scores. Afterwards we went back to cabins (curfew---10PM, no guys in girl's cabins, vice versa, stay quiet; 12AM, light off, stay dead quiet; 6AM, curfew ends). In the cabins, the boys were playing Mafia (EXTREMELY LOUD), and when Mr. Tran came to inspect us, he told the players to sleep. So lights off, and we went to bed.

The next day, a group of boys, Carl, Kelvin, Jack, Tyler, Evan, Ivan, Cody, and I went running with Mr. Tran at 6:30 in the morning. A mile down the road, and back. Afterwards, we ate breakfast and played Super Quiz. The group activity was to depict a scene from the Oxford play of Frankenstein. We chose Act 2 First half, where the Creature stalks Agathe (who is blind), and Felix, who brags about his awesome shot with his musket. So, for this act, Kelvin was Felix,
Agathe was played by the second West girl, Brittany and I held the windows, Alecs held the elderly picture of the old man (sorry Spencer), Virginia was the narrator, Jack portrayed the creature, and Carl and Carmen were the doors. We got a decent score, and again, other groups did an awesome job with their acts! For a treat, we got to watch Young Frankenstein, and then we got to roast some marshmallows. We were to finish the movie the next day. At the boys cabin, half of us were playing Mafia and the other was playing Cards Against Humanity. Something happened that kept all of us awake during the night, but luckily, nothing unfortunate happened.

On our last day at Camp, a few boys, Kenneth, Tyler, Jack, Zechuan, Paul, Vinson, Kelvin, Peng, Phil, and I went hiking up the mountainside (sadly for Mr. Tran, only Vivian went running with him). Ironically, Kenneth was in sandals and was helping all of us. We got to the mountainside, where we were faced by slippery logs, unstable rocks, and loose dirt. Only did Peng kinda slipped, or else we were all fine, and we took several group pictures down the hike. There was a tree that supposedly got hit by lightning, and some of us took a picture with the tree (talk about Victor Frankenstein). We were almost back to the lounge when we found a low basketball hoop, where people took dunks on the hoop (it was funny how Kenneth tried and tried to dunk, only to be succeed one shot by Vinson). We got back to the lounge a bit too early for breakfast. Another Super Quiz and we were given time to clean the cabin and meet with our group for the song that we were to make from the ACADEC topics. We chose Lang Lit, and we made a parody of Old Town Road. Our song was untitled (not Falling Buffalos by David W), and it was based on the Creature convincing himself to go to Victor Frankenstein so that Victor can make him a mate. We sang our songs after lunch, and the coaches sang as well (Mr. Tran was actually quiet [for once?]). Soon to leave (sadly, the bus got here on time). I sat in front of the bus, and the people in the back of the bus were really creative in killing time. They (especially Cody) were singing, and at the end of the trip, they sang Thanks to the bus driver. AN AMAZING trip with ACADEC (Certainly will come back next year)!
